When choosing a web address, or domain
name, follow these guidelines:
- Make sure your domain is easy to say, remember, and spell.
- Choose a domain that reflects your business name, the products you offer, or topics your web site will cover.
- Use only letters, numbers, and hyphens (spaces and other symbols aren't allowed).
- Try .net and .org extensions — they're as well-known as .com, but you'll have more options.
- If your first choice isn't available, try rearranging the word order or using abbreviations.
- For variety, add hyphens or words such as online, store, the, or shop to your business name.
- For inspiration, make a list of keywords about your business, then try combining them to find a unique web address.
- Don't register a domain name that could be confused with someone else's. For example, if someone owns learn2yoga.com, don't register learns2yoga.com. You'll end up sending traffic to the wrong site.
Most importantly, before you settle on a name, test it with potential customers, friends, and family. Is it memorable? Does it reflect your business? If not, keep trying!
